Buttery avocado on toast or chopped into salad is delicious and super healthy. Guacamole dip is always a winner at dinner parties. But are you familiar with avocado oil at all? It’s a versatile oil to use in your cooking and the health benefits are just as extensive as that of olive oil. Did you know that avocado oil is wonderful for your skin too?
The history of avocado
Avocados are believed to have originated from Mexico and researchers found that humans began cultivating them around 5000 years ago. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that avocados gained popularity and people became aware of the health benefits.
Studies indicate that avocado oil may reduce the symptoms of arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory properties, reduce blood pressure and can assist in the the prevention of the development of heart disease and high cholesterol.
Botanically, avocado is a large berry containing a single seed. The oil is extracted from the flesh of the avocado fruit. It is packed with nutrients – vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and antioxidants. All very beneficial for healthy skin.
The benefits of avocado for the skin
Excellent source of moisture and nutrients
Avocado oil penetrates the skin deeply to hydrate and deliver the health-giving nutrients, improve cell function and help reduce the signs of ageing. Avocado oil soothes the skin and is excellent for people who suffer from very dry skin.
It is rich in oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid, and omega-3 fatty acids – the same fatty acids found in fish oil. It contains Vitamin A, E and D, some of which are regularly used in cosmetics for their antioxidant and healing properties. It contains potassium, lecithin and magnesium, and provides a natural source of a potent phytosterol called beta-sitosterol, which helps to reduce inflammation and strengthen cells.
Reduce age spots and sun-damage
Avocado oil promotes the fading of age spots over time and reverses the signs of sun damage by strengthening the elastic and collagen properties of the skin. It helps to regenerate stronger skin cells through its skin-feeding nutrients. The antioxidants and fatty alcohols found in avocado oil helps to protect the skin against age-related wrinkles and controls pigmentation problems.
Treat skin conditions and wounds
Through its excellent anti-inflammatory properties, avocado oil helps to ease the discomfort from skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The soothing and moisturising effect of the oil helps to relieve itching. It can also accelerate wound healing from injuries such as scrapes, rashes and burns, by regenerating healthy cells, strengthening the skin and reducing scarring.
