Others simply say that “essential” refers to the “essence of the plant” – its fragrance.

Throughout the articles and research available online, there are a few essential oils that are repeatedly recommended because they deliver powerful medicinal benefits and beautiful natural scents. It just so happens these essential oils are featured in the Down to Earth ailment and skincare range. Here’s why we chose to use them in our topical products.
Tea Tree oil
Tea Tree essential oil is well known for its potent antibacterial and antifungal properties. With a strong natural antiseptic scent it’s no surprise! It is recommended for acne-prone skin because it eliminates acne-causing bacteria and regulates oil production, which helps to decrease the frequency of breakouts. Tea Tree oil can also be used to treat other infections like athlete’s foot, ringworm and cold sores, and to clean fresh wounds.
Rosemary essential oil is often overlooked in skincare, but it is a great skin treatment. With anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, it eases redness and puffiness, leaving the skin clean and calm. It is a natural astringent that helps to tighten skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also improves skin circulation, which can help firm and tone. It has a delightful fresh, woody and citrus fragrance.
Lavender essential oil has a beautiful floral, yet light woody fragrance that calms the mind and senses. It is known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that help soothe skin irritations. It also stimulates skin cell regeneration, so is well suited to mature skin and is a great treatment for blemishes like sun spots and scars.
Rose Geranium oil
Rose Geranium essential oil has a rose-like scent, as the name suggests. The plant has small pink flowers and is indigenous to South Africa. It has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that help speed up wound healing, and is used to treat skin problems such as burns and eczema. It improves circulation which aids skin cell renewal, making it useful for reducing skin imperfections and evening out skin tone. It helps to regulate oil production, clearing and balancing sluggish skin.
